any number can play 2005
photocopied acetate, endless cassette, tape player.
A distillation of ‘the invisible generation’ by WS Burroughs, whereby the text is orated to a looped cassette tape, recording speech over itself. Titled as ‘any number can play’ because the body of text implies that the approaches and techniques can be and should be executed by many ‘activators’, this interpretation of the text looks at the sonic potential of the voice, text and repetitive manner of looping tape. What results is murmur and almost incoherence of the contents, revealing tonal semblances of the orators’ voice.
